Ryan Reynolds on ‘Spirited,’ Will Ferrell and Ugly Christmas Sweaters

For years, Ryan Reynolds was that guy, that wise-cracking, smart aleck who appeared in the same role over and over again in some funny movies.

But then, something changed. His roles aren’t that many: he just turned out to be really, really good.

Looking back at a career nearly three decades long, it’s amazing how Ryan went from Canadian child actor playing hormonal teens and rom-coms to eventually becoming one of the most recognizable comedic/action/superhero stars in mainstream Hollywood today. became one of Not to mention as the husband of Blake Lively, one half of the world’s most loved celebrity couples; Blake confirmed just over a month ago that they were expecting their fourth child together,

More recently, he has also received support from sports fans around the world after Taking ownership of Welsh football club Wrexham AFC, Friends, alongside actor Rob McElhenney. Later vision-series –welcome to wrexham– Tracking Rob and Ryan’s crash course in football club ownership and the fate of a team and a city counting on two Hollywood stars to bring them their good fortune, it has become a global success.

Nevertheless, it is comforting to know that dead pool is not an actor Feather all the time, although his many popular movies And social media posts might have you believe otherwise. Ryan is surprisingly soft-spoken and quite honest as he sits down with Weekend on a Zoom call to promote what could be this year’s Christmas blockbuster.

another reincarnation of Christmas Carol, brave sees him teaming up with none other than Will Ferrell (a comedic match for the ages) on Scrooge’s path to redemption – or is it? This time around, it’s Clint Briggs (Reynolds) who turns the tables on his host, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Ferrell) until the present finds itself re-examining its past, present and future!

Ryan admitted he was nervous while shooting his first musical, even as he balanced working on the project while shooting the John Krasinski-directorial. If (with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell and others) as well as his return to R-rated territory third dead pool Movies which ushers him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe… with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

Excerpts from the interview:

What was the most challenging part of working on your first musical?

Everything else was easy when you compared it to singing and dancing (with fake horror expression),

I am not a natural singer or dancer; It’s not something I’ve spent my whole life making a craft like the incredibly talented singers and dancers we’re working with. So I felt like a spectator, because I was so impressed by the sheer level of talent that these guys brought to the set every day. My job was, in some ways, really fun and fanciful because I got to warm to his incredible talent and aura, but also kind of scary because I hadn’t been into music before.

But this was also one of the reasons why I signed the film; An elaborate excuse to work with someone I’ve admired throughout my career, which is Will Ferrell.

Since the original novel is about the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future visiting Ebenezer Scrooge to offer him a chance at redemption, if you can visit him as a spirit this year, you can make your What would you call the younger self?

(laughs) Oh wow Hmm, I guess idealism is something that ebbs and flows throughout one’s life. I feel like I started off very idealistic, fell a little short, and now I feel pretty idealistic again.

I would probably tell my past self that, Hey, your honor, you’re about to go on a very wild roller-coaster, I had no preconceived expectations about this business; As such, there was no part of me that ever had the audacity to think that I would still be doing this job as long as I was privileged enough to do it. So I imagine my younger self would be pretty in awe of the ride I was lucky enough to go on.

What was it like acting with Will Ferrell? Did you feel pressured at all?

I didn’t really feel any pressure because I don’t really bring any competitiveness to work that I really love; I really celebrate and love my co-stars historically.

Having said that, Will was special, because I’ve admired him for so much of my career. I sit watching him in films, wishing and hoping that I get a chance to work with him. You know, they say never meet your heroes. But sometimes they can exceed your highest expectations of them… and they definitely will.

Ryan Reynolds:

Ryan Reynolds: “I’ll always look back on this experience as the time I got to hang out with Will Ferrell”

Not only is he an incredibly talented comedian, but he’s also not active all the time, and there’s something really cool about that. You really connect with her as a human being and have really wonderful and dynamic conversations. And then, all of a sudden, you can act comical; He and I used to waste hours every day just reprimanding each other. I will always look back on this experience as the time I got to hang out with Will Ferrell.

What are your thoughts on the previous ‘Christmas Carol’ movies and how is ‘Spirited’ different from them?

I like the Muppets version that had Michael Caine in it, and the Bill Murray version too ( stingy, I think I’ve seen several different iterations of it over the years, and they all offer something completely wild and different.

The original Dickensian classic, as you know, is quite grim, a little morbid and even scary. brave Much softer, more fun and is for every member of the family. All my kids have seen bits and pieces of some other interpretation of the Dickens classic, and it freaks them out!

This particular version of it resonated greatly, because I see that much of what we assimilate and accommodate nowadays comes through social media and manipulation. That’s why it’s getting harder and harder to find really reliable and objective information these days. That’s something my character Clint is exploiting, and he uses it for evil.

You’ve worked with co-stars who are incredibly good at comedy over the years; From Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) and Samuel L. Jackson (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) to Jason Bateman (The Change-Up) and The Rock (Red Notice). Do you have any favourites, and how does Will compare to them?

It is a good question. I would say this is probably the best chemistry I’ve ever had with my partner shawn levy…who is the director. Sean and I have collaborated on both free boyAnd adam project, and we both had a really special dance; We are hoping to bring the same magic to the next dead pool Thin layer.

But listen, I’m not going to sleep on Will Ferrell. Batting the ball back and forth with him was magical. I was more nervous than Will in the beginning because I was so impressed with his work. So my concern going into this was something like, don’t print will ferrell, because that would have been my death. I was a little too self-conscious or self-conscious in the beginning, but I eased into it when I saw that Will was about the nicest person you could ever work with.

What do you enjoy most about Christmas?

Christmas day is never quite as magical as it is after several weeks have passed, isn’t it?

I have three daughters and we enjoy having that leadership; They believe in the magic of Christmas and every aspect of the holiday. For me, it’s a bit of a creative exercise, and it’s my and my wife Blake’s responsibility to create the magic that makes everyone feel special, and allow them to view their Christmases with the same fondness Which I did as one. baby.

Any funny off-screen moments from the whole ‘Urdu’ shooting experience?

Will Ferrell saw a picture Blake wearing “Jelly Shoes” A magazine followed by an article about it. He thought it was so funny, so he sent a text to both me and Blake about how much he loved them.

So, Blake made them jelly shoes that were also tap shoes. I was not aware of that. And then, one day on set, Will just came out wearing them, and was trying to tap dance. It was probably the hardest laugh I’ve had in my entire life.

Finally, have you taken out your ugly Christmas sweater for this year?

It’s always the same! it’s mine The Ugly Sweaters I Make for the SickKids Foundation in Toronto. I will be doing it again this year with some very special guests, which I am very excited about. who knew that a Simple practical joke from Hugh Jackman Turns out to help thousands of kids not only in Canada, but all over the world, eh? That’s great.

Spirited will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on November 18
