Actor-composer Saba Azad was at his best during a recent interview with Hindustan Times, in which he reveals why he decided to use Saba Azad as his stage name. The 36-year-old actress revealed that ‘Azad’ was her grandmother’s surname and her name on the passport still reads as Saba Grewal. “The name on my passport is Saba Grewal. My father is of Sikh origin and my mother is Muslim, but neither follows religion nor imposes her opinion on me. She is an atheist. Azad was my maternal grandmother’s surname. I loved the sound of it. And the meaning of the course. The desire for freedom is the most human instinct. That’s why I adopted it as my stage name,” Saba Azad told Hindustan Times.
Saba, who is originally from Delhi, explained what her formative years were like and added, “I am from Delhi, I come from a family of academicians and artists, we had a very normal middle-class upbringing with lots of cultural performances. Theatre, cinema, dance and music were a big part of my growing up years.”
