Wrestler and two-time Olympic medalist for India Sushil Kumar has been granted interim bail. Sushil was arrested in connection with the murder of former junior wrestler Sagar Dhankhar, who was a national wrestling champion. Sushil Kumar Advocate Pradeep Rana told IANS that his client has got interim bail to take care of his ailing wife.
“Savi – his wife, is ill. He wanted to meet her during this critical time. The court heard the matter and granted interim bail,” Rana said.
“Mrs. Savi will undergo surgery on Monday. She has been allowed to visit his wife till November 12,” he said.
The petition was “on purely medical and humanitarian grounds”.
The petition states that his wife was suffering from severe lower back pain for a long time. The petition further states that the pain in her lower back started affecting the lower limbs as well and she was unable to walk properly without support. She slipped in the washroom and got a jolt in her spine. He is to be operated on 7th November at Acharya Shree Bhikshu Government Hospital.
Delhi PoliceHowever, opposing the bail application, it was said that the offense was heinous in nature and connected with the murder case.
The police argued that Savi was living with her parents and there are other family members to look after her.
“There is every possibility of Sushil Kumar influencing and intimidating the witnesses. If he is granted bail, he may be released on bail,” the police said.
The court, after hearing both the sides, said: “Having regard to the medical condition of the wife of the applicant and the fact that there are two minor children, this Court is of the view that the presence of the accused would be required, Ordered to be released on interim bail till November.”
The court has also asked him to deposit a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and two sureties of the same amount. Two security personnel will keep a watch on him round the clock. Sushil Kumar was lodged in Tihar Jail. He is facing murder charges. The police have so far arrested 18 people in this case.
