Sandhu: Amidst Covid-19 challenges, historic milestone in Indo-US ties: Ambassador Sandhu – Times of India

Washington: The top envoy from New Delhi said here that despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, there are some historic milestones in India-US relations.

In 2021, Sandhu said the US administration, Congress, industry, the diaspora and the American people at large came out to support India when the second wave of Covid-19 hit India in the summer. President Biden spoke to Prime Minister Modi, underlining that the US stood shoulder to shoulder with India, and recalled how India supported the US when the US boomed last year.
“The overwhelming support we have received from across America is a testament to the closure of the shackles we share. Just before the second wave hit India, India supplied vaccines to over 90 countries around the world. It was heartwarming to see our friends, and partners like the United States, show equal amounts of warmth to India in this time of need,” Sandhu said.
At the same time, the pandemic hasn’t stopped the two countries from moving forward with deeper engagement. Prime Minister Modi participated in several summits hosted by President Biden in April – the Virtual Leaders’ Summit on Climate; Virtual COVID Summit in September; Global Supply Chain Summit on the sidelines of the G20 in Rome in October; He said that during the COP26 summit on Build Back Better for the World in Glasgow in November.
“There are several ministerial-level engagements: the Secretary of State and the Secretary of State meet on a regular basis. The Defense Secretary visited India in March as part of his first overseas tour. The Finance Minister visited the US in October USTR Was in Delhi recently for the Trade Policy Forum, and the visit was an opportunity for a wider dialogue on the economic partnership between the two countries.”
“The Congress delegation has recently visited India. The Foreign Secretary was here in September. Several senior official level meetings have been held, to discuss the bilateral agenda in various areas including defence, health, narcotics, counter-terrorism, economic and financial. Advancing partnership, financial regulation, strategic sector, etc,” Sandhu said.
According to Sandhu, both the countries started new projects. The India-US Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership, was launched by Prime Minister and President Biden at the climate summit in April.
“We have seen the US joining the International Solar Alliance. There is also the I-2 U-2 initiative, which was launched by: India-Israel; US-UAE Ministerial Dialogue. We saw some new initiatives under the Quad, as well Also in the areas of space, cyber security, high standard infrastructure and education,” he said.
“We have proved yet again that India-US relations are people-centred and people-driven. Be it the ‘Vande Bharat Mission’, or the support to Indian students during the lockdown, or the support for each other, during the Covid surge, people set benchmarks. Their aspirations are our guide, and as a government, we make every effort to live up to their expectations,” Sandhu said.
