Belagavi: There is a constant clamor among the Belagavi-Sangli commuters to restart the passenger trains that were withdrawn for gauge conversion in 1971. The services did not resume even after the work was completed in 1995.

Earlier, the Central Division of the Railway Department had cited some technical difficulties for not starting the trains, but now the migrant group has rejected them. Around six passenger trains were running till Miraj, but only one passenger train is running till Shedbal after the pandemic hit.
Business in the turmeric market is also getting affected, due to which the economy is slowing down. The Sangli Chamber of Commerce has also written to Belagavi MP Mangala Angadi requesting him to persuade the Railway Department to run more trains on the route.
