Long-running series on freedom struggle produced by Netflix is ​​in the works, says I&B secretary

The Union Government and Netflix have entered into a partnership with the release of two-minute videos on seven women changemakers, titled ‘Azadi Ki Amrit Kahaniyan’, announcing the production of more such videos and a serial on the freedom struggle. To celebrate 75 years of independence.

At the launch event, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that Netflix will produce 25 short videos on various topics as part of the government’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations. In the presence of Netflix’s global television head Bela Bajaria, Mr Thakur asked the streaming service to produce 75 such videos.

The protagonists of the three videos – Pithoragarh-based environmentalist Basanti Devi, the first woman to scale Mount Everest twice in five days, Anshu Jamsenpa and India’s first woman firefighter Harshini Kanhekar were also present during the event. The video, narrated by actor Neena Gupta and produced by Netflix, will be shared on social media and broadcast on Doordarshan, Mr Thakur said.

“This initiative aims to bring to the fore inspiring stories of Indians and these stories will inspire and empower more people to achieve their goals,” he said.

I&B secretary Apoorva Chandra said a long-running series on the freedom struggle, was working as a part of the partnership with Netflix.

Mr Thakur said that the government and Netflix are also partnering in training sessions for filmmakers, post-production, animation and music production. He urged Netflix to make India the hub of content production for the world.

Ms Bajaria observed that Netflix’s commitment to India was “strong and growing”. Speaking about the seven videos that were released on Tuesday, he said they told the stories of women who fought against odds to achieve their dreams.

The main characters are Poonam Nautiyal, a health worker who works to vaccinate everyone in her district in Uttarakhand; Dr. Tessy Thomas, India’s first woman scientist to lead the missile project; Tanvi Jagdish, the first competitive female stand-up paddle-boarder; and Aarohi Pandit, the world’s youngest and first woman pilot to single-handedly cross the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean in a light-lift aircraft.

Later, Mr. Chandra told Hindu That a serial on the freedom struggle was a “suggestion” when asked when it would be released.
