Noted film and theater director Mysore Srinivasa Sathyu, popularly known as MS Sathyu, will turn 93 on July 6. To mark his birthday, and to honor his immense contribution to the world of art and cinema and its impact on generations of artists. , Vebhina, Bangalore is organizing a week long festival of the creative genius of Shri Sathya ‘Satya Sambhraam’.
famous for his film hot air (1973), a post-Partition classic, Mr Sathyu is considered an icon along with filmmakers such as Mrinal Sen, Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, who ushered in a new wave of parallel cinema in India. Patron of the Indian People’s Theater Association (IPTA), his body of work includes nine plays, eight feature films, three telefilms and four teleserials. Sri Satyu is also the recipient of Padma Shri (1975).
week long retrospective
Starting 4th July, WeBhinna’s series of events will commemorate some of the best works of Mr. Sathyu in a career spanning over six decades. The retrospective will feature two plays and two films directed by him as well as a documentary on his life and work directed by Masood Akhtar.
The plays that will be staged are: Blessed: And Gul-e-Bakawali, Films to be screened include chitegu chinte (1978) and Bara (1982), an adaptation of UR Ananthamurthy’s short story, which won Best Film and Best Director at the Karnataka State Film Awards as well as the Filmfare Awards.
While Sathyu’s senior theater practitioners and contemporaries will share their experiences of working with him, the event aims to encourage the current generation of film and theater enthusiasts to celebrate Mr. Sathyu’s illustrious career as a theater-person, filmmaker and art director. will provide an opportunity to learn about , Film director KM Chaitanya will also lead a discussion with theater students on MS Sathyu and the theater movement in India.
