Kicking off a new row after former Karnataka minister and Congress working president Satish Jarkiholi, who said the word “Hindu” does not belong to India, is not new to controversies and is known to speak his mind.

Jarkiholi’s remarks have sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with the BJP calling it an attempt to incite the Hindu population, and the Congress calling it “unfortunate”.

Senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala condemned Jarkiholi’s remarks on behalf of the party. When Jarkiholi spent the night in the cemetery

As Excise Minister in the Siddaramaiah government in 2014, Jarkiholi ate dinner and spent a night at a cemetery in Belagavi city to dispel superstition surrounding the graveyard. This came as he was pressuring the Congress government to introduce the Karnataka Anti-Superstition Bill, the Indian Express reported.
“I want to bust the myths and fears that surround graveyards and show that they are peaceful places,” the Congress leader had said.

Jarkiholi had earlier said that people like him and Microsoft founder Bill Gates became rich without worshiping Goddess Lakshmi. Jarkiholi had declared assets of over Rs 148 crore from its sugar and allied businesses in 2021.

Satish Jarkiholi is the leader of Scheduled Tribe Valmiki Nayak community and his three brothers are also in politics of different parties. While Satish has come into fresh controversies, the other brothers also remain in the limelight. His brother Ramesh Jarkiholi (62) is in the BJP and had to resign from the ministerial post in 2021 due to rape allegations. 56-year-old Balachandra Jarkiholi is a BJP MLA, while 51-year-old Lakhan Jarkiholi is an independent member of the Legislative Council.
