SC asks NEET aspirants to represent govt to extend internship

The Supreme Court asked the Health Ministry to make a representation seeking extension of one-year internship to MBBS students beyond May 31. Internship is one of the major criteria to be eligible for NEET-PG-22 exam.

A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Vikram Nath said that in view of the difficulty being faced by the candidates, the ministry may decide on the representation within a week from the date of its submission. However, she is not expressing any opinion on the issue at this stage, the bench also said.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for MBBS students, submitted that since the examination has been extended, there is a need to look into this parameter. Since the students appearing for the exam have to complete a mandatory internship of one year by May 31, 2022 to be eligible for the NEET-PG-22 exam, “this May 31, the deadline may be extended by a month or two.” “, They said.

The bench said it would amount to stepping into a policy decision as there is no uniform date for commencement of internship.

“Suppose, even if we extend the May 31 deadline by a month or two, there may be a group of students who still missed the deadline by a year. This is a policy decision, let the government consider your representation”, the bench said.
