live-in relationship: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL seeking registration of live-in relationships with the Center calling it a “rabbit” idea.
“What does the Center have to do with the registration of live-in relationships? What kind of vicious idea is this? It is high time the court starts imposing fines on the petitioners who file such PILs. Dismissed,” the bench observed. It also said that comprising Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala.
Citing the rise in crimes like rape and murder, advocate Mamta Rani filed a petition seeking a direction to the Center to frame rules for registration of live-in relationships. He cited the recent case of Shraddha Walker murder, who was killed by her live-in partner Aftab Amin Poonawalla.
A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked petitioner advocate Mamta Rani whether she wanted to promote the safety of these people or wanted them not to enter into live-in relationships.
The counsel replied that the petitioner wanted the relationship to be registered in order to enhance their social security.
