Schools in West Bengal reopen today; Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presided over the meeting on Durga Puja 2022

The third wave of Covid-19 had forced the West Bengal government to opt for a partial lockdown in January. However, following a sudden drop in the number of infections, the state government allowed a gradual and restricted opening of some public places.

And now on Thursday, schools and other educational institutions started reopening. All government schools are currently open to students of classes VIII to XII.

Schools, colleges and universities in the state were all closed on March 16, 2020. Classes IX to XII were started on 12 February 2021. But from April 20, the schools were closed again. After some more time of reopening and closing, they were last closed on January 3, 2022.

This did not go down well with the parents and guardians of most of the students. Last month, there were protests across the state and several cases were registered against the state government for shutting down schools. Finally the Chief Minister announced that schools, colleges and universities from class VIII to XII would remain open from February 3.

Apart from opening the schools, the Chief Minister has made another announcement. On February 3, for the first time after the outbreak of the pandemic, CM Mamata Banerjee held a meeting of state officials. According to reports, he along with the chief secretaries met district magistrates, superintendent of police and additional chief secretaries of each department.

Banerjee made an important announcement regarding this year’s Durga Puja. He said, ‘The procession will leave from Shyambazar at 1 pm on September 1. Our city Kolkata will thank UNESCO for recognizing the biggest festival of the state. People from all over the state will participate in the rally. There will also be a worship carnival on Red Road.”
