Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has said that the new vehicle scrappage policy will help the country achieve its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Speaking at the inauguration of the new Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu Vehicle Scraping Facility in Noida, Gadkari said India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). Commitment is important for the government. And the minister is confident that vehicle scrap policy is one of the solutions to achieve this goal.

Union Minister Gadkari spoke about the benefits of scrappage policy at the inauguration of Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu Vehicle Scrapping Facility in Noida.
Addressing the media, Union Minister Gadkari said, “The commitment of the Hon’ble Prime Minister in COP26 to net-zero emissions by 2070 is very important.” He further added, “I am 100 percent sure that this scrappage policy is also going to be useful… Where we are facing the problem of overpopulation, I believe this is one of the solutions for that.”

The government also believes that the vehicle junk policy will lead to an increase in sales of new cars. Gadkari said, “This scrapping policy is going to boost automobile sales. We are expecting 10 to 12 per cent more sales due to scrapping policy, and it is a win-win situation for all stakeholders.” The minister further said that the scrappage policy has the potential to reduce the cost of raw materials by up to 33 per cent, thus increasing the GST revenue on vehicle sales of about 30,00-40,00 crores for the government.

Gadkari also said that the government is expecting a fresh investment of over Rs 10,000 crore in automotive fitness centers and scrapping centres. The target is to set up 3 to 4 scrapping centers in every district, which will eventually help in generating more employment as well.
