Russia Intensified its attack on Ukraine on Friday as the Vladimir Putin-led government directed Russian troops to take their offensive beyond the capital Kiev. On Thursday, war broke out near Chernobyl after Russian troops took control of the site after the battle. Ukrainian Ukraine’s presidential adviser, Mykhailo Podolik, said national guards were protecting the defunct plant.
In a dramatic turn of events, Hollywood actor and director Sean Penn was seen filming a documentary in Ukraine, especially in Kiev, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This information was confirmed by Hollywood publication Variety.
Photos released by UkraineThe presidential press service on Thursday showed the Oscar winner attending a media briefing at the presidential office in Kiev as Russian forces invaded the country.
“The director came to Kiev specifically to record all the events happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country,” the presidential office said in a translated statement on its Facebook page.
“Sean Penn is among those supporting Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a display of courage and honesty.”
It said that Penn – who has become a high-profile campaigner on humanitarian and political issues – had spoken to Ukrainian political and military figures as well as journalists.
The statement said Penn had earlier traveled to Ukraine in November and met with the military to prepare for the documentary.
“Sean Penn demonstrated the courage that many others, especially Western politicians, lack,” it said.
“The more such people, true friends of Ukraine, who support the fight for independence, the sooner it will be possible to stop a large-scale attack on Russia.”
Industry publication Variety said Penn’s documentary was for Vice Studios in association with Vice World News and Endeavor Content.
Penn representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
