“Investors need to be careful and do their due diligence while investing in securities markets,” said Ajay Tyagi, Chairman, SEBI.
Amid increasing retail participation in equity markets, SEBI Chairman Ajay Tyagi has cautioned investors against investing based on market rumours and asked them to deal only with registered middlemen.
Post COVID-19, the Indian securities market witnessed a significant increase in the market capitalization as well as the number of new demat and trading accounts. In addition, mutual funds saw significant inflows, Mr. Tyagi said.
“Investors need to be careful and do their due diligence while investing in securities markets. They should not invest based on market rumours and should only deal with registered middlemen,” Mr Tyagi said in a message on the occasion of World Investor Week 2021.
He said that SEBI is playing the role of a teacher by conducting various types of financial education and investor awareness activities. One such activity, which is done every year, is the celebration of World Investors Week (WIW).
WIW is an initiative of the International Organization of Securities Markets Commission (IOSCO) and is a global event celebrated by securities market regulators across the world. This year WIW is being celebrated from November 22 to November 28.
During the week, the SEBI chief said a wide range of investor awareness activities have been planned across the country. These include investor awareness programmes, quiz competitions and media campaigns etc.
“As the saying goes, informed investors are a protected investor. SEBI is continuously working towards investor awareness and education as a means of protecting investors,” he said.
He further added that when new investors enter the market, they expect the market to be efficient, investor-friendly and a safe place to invest.
“Protecting the interest of investors is an important order of SEBI. In this direction, SEBI has always endeavored to ensure market integrity, provide investors with simple investment procedures and have a robust investor grievance redressal mechanism,” Mr. Tyagi said.
On Monday, major stock exchanges BSE and NSE in association with depository CDSL announced the launch of celebration of the globally popular event World Investor Week 2021. During the week, they will organize a slew of educational activities.
