A new study has shown that protection from 3 COVID vaccines lasts more than four months to prevent severe symptoms from the virus. Previously, several studies had also reported that the third dose is important for Omicron.
A Danish study found that more than 121 days after being administered, a third dose of the vaccine still provided 77.3% protection against symptoms that required hospitalization. The study, published by Denmark’s Statens Serum Institute for Infectious Diseases, has not yet been reviewed.
It further stated that the third dose provides 90.2% protection against hospitalization immediately after administration and that three shots reduce the risk of omicron by approximately 50%.
Denmark was one of the first countries to be affected by the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. From November to March, 70% of its adult population contracted Omicron. The Nordic country ended all virus restrictions on February 1 as high vaccination rates kept Omicron from overburdening its hospitals.
According to the institute, more than two-thirds of the shots administered in Denmark were from Pfizer Inc.-BioNtech, with most of the remainder vaccinated from Moderna Inc.
Extensive record keeping by the Danish healthcare system meant that researchers were able to compare nearly complete data on vaccinations, hospitalizations and pre-existing conditions with highly detailed COVID testing records.
