New Delhi: Supreme court Refused to consider CPM’s plea against demolition drive on Monday Shaheen Bagh And said that he cannot interfere in this matter at the behest of any political party.
Asking the petitioners to approach the High Court, a bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and BR Gavai said: “Why is the CPM filing the petition? Which fundamental right is being violated? Not at the behest of political parties. This is not a forum. You go to the High Court.”
When senior advocate P Surendranath, appearing for the CPM, referred to the recent orders of the apex court on Jahangirpuri where the demolition drive was stayed, the bench said let the affected parties come.
“We have not given anyone a license to come here to say that my house cannot be demolished, even if it is unauthorized,” he said. You cannot take shelter of that order. We cannot interfere… that too at the behest of political parties.”
Bulldozers returned amid protests at Shaheen Bagh
Earlier today, at Shaheen Bagh, the site of anti-CAA protests, there was high drama as South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) officials rushed there with bulldozers, trucks and police force to clear illegal encroachments.
In December 2019, Shaheen Bagh was the center of protests and picketing against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The sit-in was closed in March 2020 when the city was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Demonstration in the area against SDMC anti encroachment campaign, Hundreds of people, including women, raised slogans against the BJP-ruled South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) as well as the central government, demanding a halt to the action. Some women protesters also stood in front of the bulldozers to stop the exercise.
Later, the SDMC officials returned with the bulldozers without practicing in the area.
Congress, AAP leaders staged a sit-in
Leaders of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress reached Shaheen Bagh and staged a sit-in against the action of SDMC.
Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan alleged that the civic body was running a campaign to vitiate the atmosphere.
Khan claimed that the people of the area had already removed the encroachment on his request.
“Wazoo Khana’ and toilets outside a mosque here were earlier removed in the presence of police. When there is no encroachment, why have they come here? Just to do politics?” You MLA said.
Delhi Congress leaders, including the party’s media cell vice-president Parvez Alam, were among those taken into custody by the police.
‘Don’t associate encroachment with religion’
Delhi BJP President Adesh Gupta The opposition of Congress and AAP to the anti-encroachment drive at Shaheen Bagh proves that they are supporters of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, he said.
“The way Congress and AAP tried to stop the anti-encroachment drive, it shows their support for Rohingyas and Bangladeshis. Those who were lying in front of the bulldozers will be given a befitting reply by the people,” he said.
“It is unfortunate that AAP and Congress are opposing the removal of encroachment from Shaheen Bagh. I urge them not to associate encroachment with religion,” Gupta said.
Anti-encroachment campaign will continue in the national capital
Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta had earlier on April 20 written to the mayors of the South and East corporations demanding “removal of encroachments by Rohingyas, Bangladeshis and anti-social elements” in their areas.
Last month, an anti-encroachment drive by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation in Jahangirpuri area, which saw violence between two communities on April 16, drew widespread criticism. The Supreme Court had to intervene to stop the action there.
SDMC’s central zone president Rajpal Singh said the operation was planned in Okhla and Jasola last month but could not be carried out due to non-availability of police force.
On May 10, the anti-encroachment drive will be conducted near Gurdwara Road near New Friends Colony, while on May 11, Mehrchand Market, Lodhi Colony near Sai Baba Mandir and JLN Metro Station will be conducted.
