An FIR was registered against AAP MLA from Okhla Amanatullah Khan for allegedly trying to break into a JCB machine by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh on Sunday.
The Delhi Police registered an FIR based on a complaint by the BJP-ruled civic body. The FIR states that Khan tried to stop a JCB machine during an anti-encroachment drive at Shaheen Bagh. Police said a case has been registered against him and his supporters under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the police, the SDMC had planned a drive to demolish illegal structures in Shaheen Bagh area under Okhla constituency. Police said as soon as JCB bulldozers reached the spot to clear the encroachment, Khan’s supporters and local residents stopped the vehicle.
Police said an argument broke out between the SDMC officials and the AAP MLA as well and some of them lay down in front of the JCB excavators. Soon, the local residents outnumbered the civic officials, resulting in the failure of the anti-encroachment drive, police said.
Police said the SDMC later filed a formal complaint asking Delhi Police to take strict action against those obstructing government work.
Protests started in the area as soon as SDMC reached Shaheen Bagh for the demolition drive. The civil authorities had to return without executing the exercise. Hundreds of people, including women, protested the operation after a bulldozer entered the area in the presence of a large number of policemen. The protesters raised slogans against the civic body as well as the Centre, demanding a halt to the action. Some women protesters even stood in front of the bulldozers to stop the exercise.
