Mumbai HCL Technologies founder Shiv Nadar has reclaimed the title of India’s most generous philanthropist, while Wipro’s Azim Premji has slipped to the second spot, according to the latest EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List released on Thursday. While Nadar’s donation for charitable works got total 1,161 crore, or 3 crore in a day, Premji saw 484 crores.
Asia’s richest person came at number seven with the donation of Gautam Adani 190 crores, while Mukesh Ambani secured the third position with 411 crore donation
Number of people donating more than 100 crores in a year has increased from just two in 2017-18 to 15. Number of people donating more Research by Hurun India and EdelGive Foundation has shown that 500 million has increased four times, from five to 20.

Donations were measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalents from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022. The list, now in its ninth year, includes 108 individuals who have donated. 5 crore or more during the period under review. Premji is the only living Indian to be named among the Edelgive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century. Due to his extraordinary contribution, his philanthropic contribution declined sharply by 95% this year 7,807 crore to his two charitable trusts last year. Education remains the most preferred philanthropic cause after health care. Among other preferred causes, donations to the environment and sustainability saw a 46% increase and skill development saw a 103% change over the previous year.

Meanwhile, philanthropic contributions have fallen in 2021-22 due to the huge base effect of pandemic spending and Premji’s extraordinary contribution in the preceding year. The combined donations of all the individuals listed in the report have declined. 5,666 crore in 2021-22 from 11,984 crore in 2019-20 and 14,755 crore in 2020-21. However, it has doubled since the 2017-18 list.
Of the top 10 philanthropists, five saw a decline in their donations since last year, including Nadar and Premji.
