Most of us cannot imagine a morning without a hot cup of coffee. In fact, it is the first thing we need to start the day. While we agree, caffeine (in coffee) gives us instant energy, it may not be good for our overall health. You heard us Several studies around the world have shown evidence of indigestion, heartburn, etc. in coffee-sensitive people. Popular nutritionist Olivia Hedlund weighs in, “If it’s the first time you drink coffee on an empty stomach, stop what you’re doing and listen. You’re messing with your hormones.” He shared a video on social media explaining the negative effects of drinking coffee on an empty stomach. Let’s make it more clear.
What happens if you drink coffee on an empty stomach?
Studies around the world have shown that the power to metabolize caffeine (the main compound in coffee) varies from person to person. This is the reason why some people get a boost from coffee while some have negative effects.
However, Olivia Hedlund says that coffee is acidic. So, it’s not only hard on our stomachs but “literally” kicks our bodies into stress response mode and blasts out cortisol. “Therefore, many people drink coffee in the morning feeling groggy, making you feel like you can conquer the world,” she explains.

Here are 5 reasons to avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach:
Digestive problems:
As mentioned earlier, coffee is acidic. This can lead to heartburn, worsening of symptoms of intestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion, etc.
Raises concern:
As noted by nutritionist Hedlund, coffee can lead to hormonal imbalances, increase anxiety and stress, and leave you feeling jittery.
Affects skin health:
Hormonal imbalance and stress often lead to skin related issues like acne, pimples, early signs of ageing, etc.
sleep deprivation:
This is another effect of anxiety. According to several studies, drinking excessive amounts of coffee can increase anxiety, restlessness, increased heart rate, and worsen panic attacks, which can lead to sleep deprivation.
