Sir David Attenborough ‘buzzes’ Adelaide Shopping Center after misunderstanding over bee colonies

Renowned BBC broadcaster and naturalist, David Attenborough, recently wrote to a shopping center in Adelaide, Australia, about the plight of bees “incorrectly”. One of the walls of his installation at the Westfield Tea Tree Plaza shopping center had a huge, beautiful mural of painted bees. The mural was accompanied by a placard containing a quote about bees attributed to David. The quote explained the role of bees in the ecosystem and the world’s dependence on pollination by bees. The quote read, “According to Sir David Attenborough, ‘If bees were to disappear from the face of the earth, humans would have only four years left to live.'” This plaque card was brought to David’s attention by a science graduate was gone, Heather Hunter, ABC reported.

Heath contacted the center’s administration and asked them to remove the plaque card incorrectly quoting David, but the quote remained in the same place it had been seen months earlier. It was then that Heath wrote to David who in turn sent Heath a letter thanking him for bringing the matter to his attention. “Of course, you are absolutely right in thinking that I have never made the statements they tell me and that they are false; both in essence and in virtue,” the letter said.

He also attached another letter, in which he requested Heath to deliver it to the administration on his behalf. The attached letter read, “It has been brought to my attention that a public notice was put up at Tea Tree Plaza with a large mural of bees, quoting me as making a statement regarding pet bee colonies. Has gone.” At the end of the letter, David said, “I would be very grateful if you removed that notice.”

ABC confirmed to the Westside Tea Tree Shopping Center that the plaque card incorrectly depicting David had been removed. This is not the first time that this particular quote has been incorrectly attributed to famous figures in science. Earlier, the quote was attributed to Albert Einstein.
