Six killed in stampede at African Cup football match

Officials at nearby Mesasi Hospital said they found at least 40 people injured in the stampede.

At least six people have been killed in a stampede outside a stadium hosting an African Cup of Nations football match in Cameroon. An official gave this information on Monday.

The governor of Cameroon’s central region, Nasseri Paul Biya, said there could be more casualties.

The stampede occurred as a crowd struggled to reach the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde’s capital Cameroon to play the host nation Comoros in a last 16 knockout game in Africa’s top football tournament.

Officials at nearby Mesasi Hospital said they found at least 40 people injured in the stampede.

Olinga Prudence, a nurse said, “Some of the injured are in very bad condition. We have to take them to a special hospital.”

Officials said around 50,000 people tried to attend the match. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000, but due to restrictions on crowd size due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not filled more than 80% for games.

Cameroon entered the quarter-finals by winning the game 2–1.
