Coimbatore: The Municipal Corporation is all set to equip all the urban primary health centers with delivery facilities. A city health official said the aim is to increase the number of deliveries in primary health centres.
There are 34 urban primary health centers in the city. Of these, 28 centers come with birthing facilities. City Health Officer Dr Pradeep V Krishnakumar said that they are taking steps to start it in the remaining six centres.
“They now lack facilities like labor rooms. corporation commissioner M Pratap Centers have been allowed to equip the same to help pregnant women avoid the long journey to reach the health facility for delivery,” the official said.
He said that the number of deliveries in the health facilities run by the corporation is increasing. “The number of deliveries has doubled in recent months compared to the same period last year, when only less than 50 deliveries were handled by the centers in a month.”
According to another health official, the number of deliveries in the city’s urban primary health centers reached a peak of 90 in June. In July, however, that number fell to 78. “Once the remaining centers are equipped with birthing facilities, we expect to handle 1,200 child births in a year.”
Another source said that the health center in Pattunool (Sukarwarpet), Thudiyalur, Ram Nagar (CTM Home), Town Hall (VVM Home), Rathinapuri, Pothnoor, Ramanathapuram, Gandhi Park (RK) Brother), Saibaba Colony (Meenakshi Maternity Home) and Raja Street were doing well on the delivery front.
Another health official said that the health workers of each primary health center in their jurisdiction are working to ensure institutional delivery for the pregnant woman.
“Some people have attempted to deliver at home without medical supervision. For this they depended on social media. Steps are being taken to put an end to this practice.”
