London: Suspect arrested in Essex, England after killing of British Conservative MP Siro David Ames Named as Ali Harbi Ali, a 25-year-old man of Somali heritage is now being held under the stringent Terrorism Act.

Officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command have an extended period of time until Friday to interrogate the suspect under the Act.
According to reports, Ali had been referred to Britain’s anti-terrorism radicalization prevention plan a few years ago, but was never a formal subject of interest to the MI5 security services.
“The man was subsequently detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and is now being held at the London Police Station,” the Metropolitan Police said.
“On Saturday, 16 October, the detectives were given a warrant for further custody Westminster The magistrate’s court allowed them to keep the man in custody till Friday, October 22, when the warrant expires. As part of a speeding check, the officers went to three addresses in the London area and searched them. One of these searches has been completed and others are on.”
On Friday, the accused was arrested from the spot and the knife used in the attack was recovered from the spot.
The incident has been formally declared a terrorism by Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Senior National Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism Policing. Dean Hayden, and the Mets Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation.
UK home secretary Preeti PatelAn Essex MP also ordered an immediate review of security procedures for Members of Parliament.
On Sunday, Patel said lawmakers were being offered “immediate” security changes following the murder and asked them to share their whereabouts with the police.
Asked whether MPs could get the security they get at Westminster, the minister said: “All these issues and options are still being considered.”
He said, “We all have changed our way of doing things due to the changing concerns, threats in the society. It has never broken the link between an elected representative and his democratic role, responsibility and the duty of those elected to him. Shouldn’t break.”
Ames represents Southend West in Essex and was undergoing surgery for a constituency – where voters can meet with their elected MP and discuss concerns – at the church on Friday when he was attacked. He was an MP since 1983 and had five children.
Ames is the second British Member of Parliament to be fatally stabbed in the past five years, following the murder of a Labor MP. Joe Cox in 2016.
