On February 16, an attack by the al-Shabaab extremist group on the outskirts of the Somalia capital killed five people and injured 16, police said. Somalia’s government said the morning attack targeted police and outposts outside Mogadishu.
Al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab frequently targets Mogadishu, and the United Nations and other international observers have warned that the group will take advantage of Somalia’s current election crisis to launch more attacks.
National elections have been delayed by more than a year.
