It is quite common to see wet clothes hanging on the balconies and terraces of the country houses. While the scorching heat outside is enough to dry our clothes, foreigners from cold climate countries often fail to understand why we hang our clothes outside, as they usually do it inside the dryer. So when someone asked on Quora, “Why do Indians dry their clothes on their balconies or terraces instead of drying them in a washing machine dryer?” Desi pitches him to explain the concept.
One of the people named Bhuvana Rameshwar who answered the question said, “India is a hot tropical country except for cold hill stations and rainy season. So, a washing machine with just a spinner is enough for us to squeeze out the water. In many homes, they don’t even have a washing machine, as we have laundry maids. In some places with water scarcity, washing machines take up a lot of water.”
“We dry these in the sun or in a cool place like on our balconies or on the terrace. Sun and wind give freshness to clothes which the drier does not get. The smell of washed and dried clothes is something to be felt, it cannot be explained. Sun drying also kills bacteria and other germs. Also, the world advises everyone to use solar energy to generate electricity and save electricity.”
Another person answering the question talked about how open drying is not limited to India or Asia, adding that it is a green option from a global perspective. The person said, “Sun-drying is also a global greener option; sunlight combined with UV rays can also disinfect clothing, prevent molds and smell good. Try it sometime.”
Many other indigenous people also spoke about the concept of drying clothes outside to be eco-friendly.
