Recalling the preparations for the attack, Ms. Nina said that Raman had left the house on December 11, after which she did not listen to him. He said the family did not report his disappearance, arguing that he might have moved in with his girlfriend, she said.

On the night of 22 December, Raman’s brother Akash got a call that his brother had been beaten up and was lying near a drain in Sagarpur. When Akash reached the spot, he found his brother subconscious and bleeding from many places. He brought her to Tagore Garden where Raman showed her that her genitals had also been chopped off.

“We immediately took him to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. They referred him to AIIMS Trauma Center where he is undergoing treatment,” said Raman’s younger brother Mohit.

Raman told the family members that he had gone to Rajasthan with the woman and both of them got married in the court. The couple returned on the evening of 22 December and went to Rajouri Garden police station for help. “They told the officers that the woman’s family threatened their lives, but the police told them not to worry and turned them away,” Ms. Nina said, adding that she had heard that the woman’s family was threatened by the couple. was informed of the presence of by officers in the police station

After the couple left the police station, they were stopped by the woman’s family and forcibly taken to Sagarpur where Raman was thrashed and his private parts chopped off to teach him a lesson.

The family said the couple had met on Facebook and even eloped in May this year, but were caught by Raman’s family before leaving Delhi. The mother said, ‘We handed over the girl to her parents, so the matter did not escalate.’ Ms Nina believed the woman’s parents were against the alliance because “they are rich and we are poor”.

The police have arrested two women including Raman’s girlfriend’s grandmother and aunt in the case and are on the lookout for other family members who are absconding.
