Sony Music Entertainment may be looking to venture into the non-fungible token (NFT) space. The company NFT, formed in 1929, seeks to bring together artists as well as music from the industry. The American music giant has filed a trademark application seeking permission to cover “audio and video recordings of live music performances certified by the NFT”. The NFT industry is gaining popularity globally, with the likes of many music personalities such as Snoop Dogg, Justin Bieber and Madonna.

This filing by Sony is among a large list of patents already filed from companies seeking to explore the NFT sector this year.

As of this time, more than 5,800 applications and patents related to NFTs have already reached the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In 2021 this number was 2,087.
Sony Music is making inroads into the virtual assets sector.
Earlier in March, the music company partnered with Solana-based NFT marketplace Snowcrash and fellow music giant Universal Music Group to release the Bob Dylan and Miles Davis NFT Collection sometime in 2022.
