Johannesburg: South Africa‘s Eskom The utility said on Sunday it would reduce planned power cuts this week after substantial progress in replenishing emergency generation reserves.
Eskom’s aging power stations run mostly on coal and are at high risk of failure, resulting in frequent outages that stifle economic growth. president of south africa Cyril RamaphosaThe U.S. government has attempted to reform Eskom to make it more efficient, but progress has been slow.
After implementing reductions of up to 4,000 megawatts (MW) by 0500 on Monday from Saturday morning, Eskom said it would reduce the reduction to Phase 3 to 3,000 MW by 0500 on Tuesday. Thereafter, Phase 2 will remain in force till Friday night.
Phase 2 cuts mean homes and businesses without their own generators will have no electricity for two to four hours a day.
“Substantial progress has been made in the recovery of emergency production reserves, and it is anticipated that the pumped storage plans will have the dam level fully filled by tomorrow morning,” the utility said in a statement.
Eskom said the two-generation units returned to service overnight, with 11 units projected to return to service in the next 24 hours, helping to reduce capacity shortfalls.
