SP chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: “BJP working for the rich wanted to cheat poor farmers with land acquisition and black laws. The party used nails, pulled their hair, made cartoons of farmers, cut them with a car, but the fear of public support to the SP’s victory march in Purvanchal forced them to withdraw the Black Act.

“The BJP should answer when the culprits responsible for the death of hundreds of farmers will be punished,” he said.

He later asked: “How much did the UP government spend on agriculture in the state? Mahoa, where PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit today, has the highest number of farmer suicides in the state.”

Earlier, the Congress had also alleged that it was an election move by the Modi government and the best interests of farmers were not on the Centre’s agenda.
