How do you feel about the controversy surrounding your comment?
My statement was a fact and was based on experience of how Maa Kali is worshiped by her devotees and what she represents to me. I don’t see any controversy in this.
The controversy is the false spirit of the BJP and its trolls who want to use religion as a tool to distract from their agenda of dividing the citizens of this country. They want to impose their monolithic idea of Hinduism on every Hindu, where they will decide who is Hindu and who is not and how our gods and goddesses should be worshipped.
What is your stand now?
My stand is very clear. I am a worshiper of ‘Shakti’ and a devotee of Maa Kali. I will stick to my statement that for me she is accepting meat and wine. ‘Mangaso Bhog’ and ‘Karo’ is something that is intrinsic to their worship.
I will not bow down to religion just because everyone is afraid to take the BJP’s narrative of a common faith. I am a proud Bengali, a proud Indian and I will defend it till my death.
Do you feel bad that your party did not support your idea?
I am a foot soldier and an ardent supporter and admirer of my leader Mamata Banerjee And the party she leads. That’s what motivates me and keeps me happy.
People from other parties as well as people like Taslima Nasreen have supported you. How do you see it?
My statements were factual about what Maa Kali meant to me. For me, religion is personal and it has nothing to do with my personal belief, what others say in support of or against it. I can’t shake my faith.
BJP is comparing you with Nupur Sharma and they are registering FIR against you. What’s your take on this?
What Nupur Sharma said was done to humiliate members of other religions and to defame Prophet Muhammad. On the other hand my statement expressed my personal belief as a Hindu, a worshiper of ‘Shakti’ and an ardent devotee of Maa Kali. What I said was in celebration of the goddess and what she means to me and to convey that she is worshiped by me and, I believe, countless other devotees.
If BJP is registering FIR, I challenge the complainants and BJP also to file an affidavit that Maa Kali is not worshiped with ‘taxes’ or ‘mangshor bhog’.
