“No legacy is so rich as honesty.” So goes a famous quote from Shakespeare.

When we were about to catch the train from Shimla in the evening, he came running there and got us repaired the clock. With a sad face, he wanted to say something, but it was too late.

My parents and brother and I went for a holiday in Shimla. We were having lunch in a restaurant. My dad had a habit of removing his wristwatch (which he loved very much because it was presented by his dearest cousin) while eating. The waiter accidentally pushed him off the table and he got damaged. He apologized and suggested a watch repair shop nearby. Somehow, the name of the small shop “Mataji Watch Repairs” caught my attention. After investigating the damage, the young owner suggested that we collect the watch the next day. Since we had to catch a train to go back to our hometown, my father expressed his inability to take it at the time which he mentioned. The boy asked my father when we were leaving and for that, my dad only said 6′ 0′ clock by train. He convinced us saying that the next morning the clock would be ready.

The next day we went to see the shop closed. The train was about to leave when he came running.

My father shook his hand and apparently with great relief, he quickly came to us and handed over the watch. My father, though pleased to get his watch back, scolded him badly for his late delivery. The man wanted to tell us something with tears in his eyes but the train started moving.

But the mystery of late delivery got solved after an hour when we bought tea from the tea vendor. Giving a cup of tea, he said, “Sir, I saw that you were scolding the boy for not opening his shop. He is my friend and he lost his mother this morning.

We appreciated his honesty even during the difficult phase of his life.
