Specially handicapped woman denied entry to Gurgaon restaurant, netizens slam owner’s apology note

Srishti Pandey, a handicapped person, has alleged that a restaurant in Gurugram, Rasta Gurgaon refused her entry when she went there to have a meal with friends. In a series of tweets, she said she was asked to sit outside the restaurant because ‘her wheelchair could disturb other eaters inside’. One of the restaurant’s founders responded by writing an apology on Twitter. Gautamesh Singh said he was “deeply sorry” and “standing for inclusivity”. The incident has sparked outrage on social media and users have said that the restaurant has caused irreparable damage to the dignity of the aggrieved person which cannot be compensated by an online apology.

On February 12, Srishti narrated the incident on Twitter.

“I went to my @raastagurgaon last night with my best friend and his family. It was one of my first outings in such a long time and I wanted to have fun. Bhaiya (my friend’s elder brother) asked for a table for four. The staff at the desk ignored him twice.”

“The third time they asked, the staff replied with “the wheelchair won’t go any more” (the wheelchair can’t go in).

We thought it was an accessibility problem, but it was not. We told him that we will manage, just book us a table. Whatever he said after that, he was stunned for a while.”

“They told us “Aandar customer harass ho jayega” (customers will be upset) pointing at me and denied us entry so easily. It came from the staff of a strange fancy place.”

“After much debate, he asked us to bring a table outside.

Now:

1) Sitting outside was ridiculous. It was getting cold. And I can’t sit outside in the cold for long because my body gets cramped. Is it really unsafe for me?”

“2) Why should I be made to sit outside anyway? Different from everyone else? If we needed a place to sit outside, would we ask? Eventually we were told to leave. clearly.”

“But am I disturbing all that much for you? Why do I always have to fight for small things? Why was I denied entry in a public place? Who are they who refuse my entry like this? give?”

“Should I just stop going out? Because apparently I’m not with others. Because I’m a “turbulent” to others because seeing me apparently “ruins” their mood. My heart breaks It’s gone. Very sad. And I feel disgusted.”

After the tweets took hold, the restaurant offered an apology.

However, some felt that this was little compensation for what Srishti had to face.

“You guys cannot even imagine how much irreparable damage you have caused to the dignity and self-confidence of a person.

If you and your employees can feel that way, that is the best apology, and your way to redemption. It also shows that the foundation of your business is very weak.”

“A personal apology for this insensitive behavior will not suffice! What are you doing to ensure such incidents happen in the future?”

“You must provide them with a good dining experience with pickup and drop service. What your staff has done is unfair. They cannot make decisions like this alone, they would have been instructed to do so for obvious reasons.”

National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma had tweeted and said that she would look into the matter.
