This bill will soon be introduced in Parliament to increase the speed limit on Indian roads.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) may soon increase the speed limit on national highways to 140 kmph. MoRTH Minister – Nitin Gadkari said that the speed limit on National Highways may soon see an upward revision and Bill to increase the speed limit on Indian roads will be introduced in Parliament soon. However, the Supreme Court and the High Court need to be first convinced before making amendments. Recently, the Madras High Court quashed a notification of the central government which had fixed the speed limit of 120 kmph for vehicles plying on highways. The bench observed that despite better engine technology and better road infrastructure, there was no improvement in the compliance of road safety rules by motorists.

MoRTH Minister – Nitin Gadkari said that the speed limit on National Highways may soon see an upward revision.
“The parameter of speed limit of vehicles in India is one of the big challenges for us. There are some Supreme Court and High Court decisions regarding car speed, due to which we are unable to do anything. Today, such an expressway is made in the country. And not even a dog can come on those roads because barricading has been done on both sides of the road. So we have made a plan that I will go to Parliament and make a bill changing all the parameters,” Gadkari told India Today Said at Conclave 2021.

The speed limit on expressways and highways should be increased from 120 kmph to 140 kmph.
Elaborating on the amendment, the Union Minister also said that the speed limit on expressways and highways should be increased from 120 kmph to 140 kmph. Similarly, the speed limit on national highways should be limited to 100 kmph on 4-lane roads, 80 kmph on 2-lane roads and 75 kmph on city roads. Gadkari said the move would help facilitate autonomous driving on Indian roads and allow car companies to manufacture such vehicles.
