The creators of Mysoorpa have now launched a concept food store that encourages families to shop together

When Sri Krishna Sweets, founded in 1948, rediscovered the traditional Mysore culinary sweet, their creamy, melt-in-the-mouth version, named Mysurpa, quickly dominated the market. Now, Murali Market, a new concept food store on Venkatanarayana Road in T Nagar, is attempting to change the way we shop for groceries.

Spread over 5,500 sq ft, the store features fruits, vegetables, dairy products, baked goods and condiments as well as ready-to-eat meals that include vegetable biryani, momos and of course, the Chennai staple: idli with chutney .

Conceived and launched by Sneha Murali, the project has been in progress for over four years, with inevitable delays due to the challenges of the pandemic. “The lockdown period proved valuable as we learned a lot about changing lifestyles and consumer requirements,” says Sneha, who joined the family-owned firm eight years ago. Discussing the renewed focus on healthy eating, Fife says they “fit into this new normal lifestyle,” adding that the response has been encouraging. The store offers value-added services like ‘Shop and Chop’ in the vegetable segment, which is popular with senior citizens. Their shelves of freshly made, local products are where they stand out from other gourmet stores. “We identified small manufacturers across Tamil Nadu. We procure it from them, and do the branding at our factory in Chennai. We offer 85 types Apples, vadmso, pickles from across Tamil Nadu and Andhra, cold pressed oil, butter and more,” says Sneha.

Scared of the spread? You just need to ask for help, says Sneha: We not only stock exotic ingredients but also teach customers who want to know how to use them. Fife says the vision is to create a space for families: “My one-and-a-half-year-old grandson can already identify certain spices and beans,” he says, adding that “families should shop together with their kids.” A fun way to teach kids how to identify vegetables and fruits.
