Sri Lanka: Covid-19: Sri Lanka to tighten inter-provincial travel ban – Times of India

Colombo: Sri Lanka On Friday it announced strict enforcement of the inter-provincial travel ban, which has been in place since the nationwide lockdown came into force in August.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa The presidential office said in a statement that officials have been directed to check traffic at provincial borders in view of the public holiday falling on October 19 and 20 and the resulting long weekend.
Sri Lanka lifted its nationwide lockdown two weeks ago as the number of deaths and infections plummeted after officials claimed a rise in the deadly third wave of the coronavirus in the country.
The death toll, which was less than 1,000 till the end of April, has now crossed 13,400.
After weeks of resistance, the government acceded to the pleas of health officials by imposing a lockdown on 20 August.
At the end of August, the death toll in some days stood at 3,000 per day, up from just 21 on Thursday, health officials said.
Director General of health services Dr Asela Gunawardene said that the number of patients of Kovid-19 in the country intensive care unit (ICU) has decreased by 50 percent.
Commenting on the lifting of the lockdown two weeks ago, he said: “It must be said that the behavior of the people in the last few days was not satisfactory”.
