Colombo: Sri Lanka Oil will allow companies in producing countries to import and sell the fuel, the power and energy minister said on Tuesday, ending a monopoly as it tries to address its shortages.

The decision of the cabinet came as a minister, kanchana vijesekeraThe Qatari leadership and a ministerial aide were due to arrive in Russia on Sunday for talks on energy deals. Wijesekera hopes to find a long-term fuel supplier in Qatar. President Gotabaya Rajapakse tweeted that he met with Russian envoy Yuri Materia on Monday. Sri Lanka bought 90,000 tonnes of Russian oil last month. The cabinet also allowed import of jet fuel.
The government will also cultivate 250,000 hectares of unused land belonging to religious institutions, including temples, churches and mosques, to avoid food shortages.
