A source in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said that Sri Lanka is looking to host the upcoming Asia Cup which starts on August 27 this year and is making arrangements for it. The tournament is to be held in August. Although Sri Lanka is the host of the tournament, questions are being raised whether it can still take place as the country grapples with a major economic crisis.

“Sri Lanka cricket officials and the ACC president met on the sidelines of the IPL final in Hyderabad and during this meeting, the officials informed that they want to host the Asia Cup and are making arrangements for it. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board will host the event. Looking forward to the meeting and they clarified their stand during the meeting,” said the source to ANI.

Earlier, ACC president Jay Shah had told ANI that he would be meeting the SLC officials during the IPL final.

The source, however, said that a final decision regarding hosting rights is yet to be taken and there are other options such as UAE and Bangladesh also being considered if Sri Lanka cannot host the event.

“It may even start before its original date, hopefully a decision will be taken in a day or two and the ACC will make an official announcement,” the source said.

Sri Lanka is grappling with a severe economic crisis with food and fuel shortages affecting a large number of people in the island nation since the start of the pandemic.

The economy has been in decline since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting tourism, which is the biggest contributor to Sri Lanka’s GDP.

Sri Lanka is also facing a foreign exchange crunch, which has affected its ability to import food and fuel. The shortage of essential commodities forced Sri Lanka to seek aid from friendly countries.
