Stalin’s intervention was also intended to signal to ministers that the chief minister had little tolerance for bad behavior in the office.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has dropped a minister from his cabinet after a subordinate filed a video complaint accusing the minister of using casteist slurs against him.

The portfolio of Minister Raja Kannappan has been changed to Backward Classes Welfare along with other sub-portfolios, a press statement said. The transport department that he held has been handed over to S Shivshankar in a swap.

According to government sources, Stalin’s intervention was also intended to signal to ministers that the chief minister had little tolerance for poor behavior in the office, particularly the behavior displayed by Kannappan.

The block development officer, who was allegedly harassed, had complained in a video that Kannappan spoke in a patronizing tone to his caste.

This is Stalin’s first cabinet change since becoming chief minister in the middle of last year. According to news agency PTI, for the first time since the DMK came to power in May 2021, the portfolio disinvestment has become important as the DMK does not usually reshuffle its cabinet.

King Kannappan is known in political circles for his economic power. He had coordinated between the two Dravidian parties in his career – the latest switch from AIADMK to DMK in February 2020.
