Powered by the stealth Omicron, China is currently witnessing a massive COVID surge. On Tuesday alone, China saw 5,280 new infections, more than double the number of the previous day. It is also the highest daily count since the start of the pandemic. Under these circumstances, scientists are constantly trying to understand this subvariant, its symptoms, and how severe it can be. Here’s everything you need to know
What are patients experiencing?
When infected, patients are complaining of six stomach-related ailments – nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, heartburn, swelling.
Earlier, the Zoe COVID app notified diarrhea as a symptom of COVID, but classified it as “less well known”.
“We are still investigating whether the increase in reports of gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, food cravings and abdominal pain that were prevalent with the previous variants means that there is now an increase in those from not associated with those who test positive for Omicron,” said one study by Zoe.
Recent studies show that many patients complain of fatigue and dizziness.
What WHO Said on Omicron Subvariant BA.2?
The World Health Organization stated that BA.2 is certainly more permeable than BA.1, but the severity level of both types is similar. And, if there’s another Omicron surge, we’ll see more of BA.2 next time around.
It also cautioned that Omicron is not lightweight, although it may be lighter than Delta.
How is it different from the original version?
Experts suggest that there is no difference between the two sub-versions in terms of seriousness and transmittance.
According to the UK Health Protection Agency (UKHSA), the oomicron version of COVID contains a genetic deletion in the “S” spike gene that makes it easy to track. However, in stealth omicrons, there is no S gene drop out, which makes it difficult to detect.
