Step-by-step guide to enable end-to-end encryption in Facebook Messenger

New Delhi: Users generally believe that Facebook Messenger does not have end-to-end encryption like WhatsApp, which comes in it by default. Therefore, this makes the platform vulnerable to hacking and personal information, including chats, can be revealed very easily. What users may not know is that Meta allows them to turn on the feature on Facebook Messenger with a few simple steps. However, the company plans to make end-to-end encryption a default setting on the platform, so long as users can turn it on manually.

End-to-end encryption is a state-of-the-art tool for hiding personal messages and information from hackers by coding messages at the origin site and encoding them only at the destination site. No third party including Whatsapp could read the messages of the users. This feature ensures privacy and security for customers who lack Facebook Messenger if they don’t turn on encryption.

Here are the steps both Android or iOS users can follow to turn on end-to-end encryption:

How to Enable End-to-End Encryption on Facebook Messenger

1. Go to Messenger mobile app and click on Chats in the bottom menu
2. Tap on the Edit icon in the top right corner
3. Turn on the toggle for the lock icon in the top right
4. Now select the name of the person you want to chat with (Not applicable for public figures)

To turn it on from within a chat, you can simply open the chatbox and tap on the “i” icon in the upper right corner. Now, select “Secret Conversation”. Users can also choose to turn on Vanish Mode from here. This will cause the conversation to disappear when the conversation is closed.

To turn on Vanish Mode, all you need to do is turn on the toggle for the Vanish Mode option in the Notifications section.

For the unversed, if end-to-end encryption is turned on for the conversation, no one except the participants in the chat can read or access the conversation. It may only be possible for others to be added to the chat manually, of which the other participants will be notified.
