Sensex Today: Indian equity markets opened lower on Friday after border tensions between India and Pakistan rattled investor sentiment.

The BSE Sensex index fell as much as 1.7 per cent to 78,968, while the Nifty50 plunged 1.4 per cent to fall below the 24,000 mark. As of 12:11 PM, Sensex was trading around 700 points down at 79,620 level. The Nifty50 was down 235 points to trade around 24,000 level.

In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap index and the Nifty SmallCap index declined 1.6 per cent and 2.4 per cent, respectively.

All the sectoral indices, including the Nifty Bank, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Metal, and Nifty IT, were trading lower led by the Nifty Realty index, which was down 4 per cent.

The rupee extended its fall to open lower on Friday, a day after seeing the steepest fall since February 2023. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India doesn’t expect wild swings in the rupee but is ready to use foreign reserves to preserve currency stability as tensions with Pakistan escalate, Bloomberg reported.

Nifty Technical View

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, noted that the Nifty 50 ended the previous session with a bearish “Dark Cloud Cover” candlestick pattern, reflecting heightened fear among traders.

“The index faced resistance around 24,550 and closed with negative sentiment. A break below the immediate support at 23,950 could lead to further downside toward 23,450. On the upside, resistance is capped at 24,400 and 24,550,” De said.
