Strict action to stop unhealthy trends in school sports: Shivankutty

General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has said that strict action will be taken to check unhealthy practices in the field of sports in schools.

He was speaking after inaugurating the State Yoga Olympiad organized by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) at Government GV Raja Sports School Mylam here on Sunday.

The minister said the government had constituted an expert committee to study the discrimination in awarding grace marks in various sporting events. Players also work hard in the same way and any kind of discrimination will not be tolerated.

The Minister said that continuous practice of Yoga has brought about a change in attitude and behaviour, apart from increasing the power and confidence of the individual. Yoga Day was celebrated in more than 200 countries under the umbrella of the United Nations. He said that the United Nations had passed a resolution to recognize Yoga as a comprehensive lifestyle.

224 yoga talents from 14 districts are participating in the Yoga Olympiad.

State Yoga Olympiad is being organized since 2016. It was interrupted for two years due to COVID-19 but resumed last year.

In 2022, Kerala had secured first position in two categories in the National Yoga Olympiad and also won the overall championship. GV Raja, a national and international panel of referees from the Yoga Federation of India, governs the competitions held at two specially designed venues in the school.

Aruvikkara MLA G. Stephen presided over the ceremony. SCERT Director Jayaprakash RK, Aruvikkara Gram Panchayat President Kala R., Program Coordinator Ajeesh PT were present.
