Sudhir Mishra recalls how Om Puri would ‘lose it’ during night shoots: ‘He will get angry’

Sudhir Mishra is currently one of the most respected filmmakers in the country. He had worked with actor Om Puri several times. In fact, Puri even won a National Award for his performance in the 1991 film Dharavi. Now, in a recent interview, Sudhir Mishra has opened up about shooting with Om Puri, and revealed how he would lose it if he was asked to shoot after midnight.

Speaking in Unfiltered By Samdish, Sudhir Mishra said, “I worked with Om Puri when I made my third film, I was a young man. I worked with him as an assistant in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and Then in 1991 I worked with him (as a director). He was a big boy. He was so kind, generous. Neither of these people was easy. When someone says, ‘He was graceful’, then It seems like they were boring people. Like everyone talks about Irfan these days, it seems he was a boring person. He wasn’t. Those were amazing, ambitious, complicated times. Money was needed, Well done. It was difficult.”

He also revealed how Om Puri hated working at night and said, “Puri sahab was often a tough guy. If you shoot after 12 o’clock in the night he will lose it. ‘What is it man? Come on… leave,’ he would say. He will be angry but will say, ‘Chal ghar pe, I will feed you lady’s finger.’ My films are mostly set at night, so he used to get angry!”

Mishra also added, “Anything you could tell him, he was decent, technically perfect. You can excite him at the last minute and it will be in the shot. If I say, ‘Puri sahab, ek aisa khayal aaya hai’, he will do it on screen. If there was no tripod and you request him to stand with his legs stretched out and then give a close up, he will do so. He was very technically (sound). ,

Sudhir Mishra last starred in Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Serious Men.
