Sumanth: I’m attracted to flawed, realistic characters

Actor Sumanth opens up on ‘Mally Modalandi’ and wonders why there is no film on life after divorce

Road in some parts. It becomes a topic of discussion in family and social circles. If that wasn’t enough, the male protagonist finds himself falling in love with a divorce lawyer. telugu movie promo molly modlandi (It Begins Again) alludes to a romantic comedy and family drama. What raises curiosity in this post-divorce life story is its lead actor Sumant, who has opted to remain single after his divorce more than a decade ago. With self-deprecating humour, the actor admitted that he could relate to some aspects of his on-screen character.

Excerpts from a conversation with Sumanth ahead of the film’s release on Zee5 on February 11:

What was your reaction when the story was told to you? Did some parts feel personal?

Director Kirti Kumar contacted me through music director Simon K King, when cloaked was in the final stage. He e-mailed the summary; The topic of divorce in the story immediately caught my attention and I asked him for the script. I liked the tone of his writing and felt that my character was relatable.

Divorce is not easy for couples or their families but this idea is no longer a taboo. Does the film reflect what is happening in the society?

I was surprised that no one has made a film on divorce in recent times, not only in Telugu but also in Hindi cinema. Many other subjects that used to be considered taboo in mainstream cinema are no longer risky, thanks to a few films starring Ayushmann Khurrana (Sumanth starred in it) naruda donorudatelugu remake of Vicky donor), but surprisingly no story has been made on the divorce. just recently we decoupled on netflix. I am told that ever since Zee5 picked up our film, it has created interest in Hindi for the remake. The story of divorce can be told seriously or lightly; We chose the latter so that it was more delicious.

Did any of your personal experiences subconsciously come in handy for this film?

I play a flawed character; He is self-deprecating and has no trouble talking about his shortcomings. I could relate to that. I improvised some of the dialogues and with Kirti Kumar, it was like a writing partnership. In fact, I love playing flawed and realistic characters that have room for redemption. I believe that not all heroes are necessarily ideal. Very few characters are autobiographical, at least in part, and this is one such occasion for me.

This type of story also has room for social commentary. Does it take advantage of this?

We didn’t get too deep into making a social commentary, but there’s a lot of subtext. We also broke the cliché. We released a promo which showed the husband and wife arriving together in the divorce court and it opened the door for her much to the shock of the lawyers. It shows that a couple can separate with mutual respect and not need to fight all the time, which I really liked.

molly modlandi Your first direct digital release. Was there a discussion on theatrical versus digital release?

I love the theater experience but I watch a lot of movies and series on digital platforms and believe there is room for both. One of the good things that has happened during the pandemic is the opening up of the OTT space. I am fine with a digital release for this film.

What are some memorable movies and series that you have watched on OTT recently?

succession And The Family Man 2 in recent times. But I watch a lot in my home theater and on my tablet while traveling, and can’t immediately remember.

You also dubbed for the Telugu version for Ranveer Singh 83, How was that experience?

I am a sports lover and when this opportunity came to me, I took it in the hope that it would open doors for dubbing opportunities. It was challenging to match the energy of Ranveer Singh and Kapil Dev. Those who watched the Telugu version told me that I did a good job.

What can you tell us about your next film Anaganaga OK RowdyMILF remake padyottam (Malayalam; 2018)?

We have made some changes after discussions with the makers of the original. We added a proper love story and tightened up some loose ends. The film is in its post-production stage. I have also worked on an experimental thriller called critical rebootWhich would be for the digital space. Then there is a supporting role in director Hanu Raghavapudi’s Telugu film starring Dulquer Salmaan.

Is this the first time you will be seen in a supporting part?

Yes, if you discount my cameo as my grandfather (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) in the NTR biopic. I’ve always been playing for author supported roles; It can be a supporting part or a dark, negative character. I would love to play an antagonist. I was moved by the story Hanu told me. It is going to be a one of its kind film and I am eagerly waiting for it.
