Raja Waring took oath and assumed office along with working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the presence of senior party leaders, MPs, MLAs and hundreds of workers.
Despite the party high command’s claim that all leaders were involved after the defeat in the state assembly elections, differences were clearly visible at the event.
Sidhu reached the PCC office, but dropped out of the establishment programme. He did not share the stage with Waring, preferring to sit in a room at the headquarters and leave after a brief meeting with his successor. Also missing was former PCC chief Sunil Jakhar, who was recently issued a show cause notice for his Dalit remarks.
After barely half an hour, Sidhu interacted with the media, which many felt was a dig at his opponents within the party. “Congress will have to reinvent itself to come back to power… Honest faces with moral authority and integrity will be propellants. We are fighting for survival for this great state… either mafia or honest people,” he later tweeted.
Waring, on his part, stressed the need for discipline in the party, saying it was of paramount importance as no organisation, whether political or business, could survive without discipline.
Urging the party colleagues to work with dedication, he assured that he would take everyone along on his mission. He said he would ensure talks and discussions within the party so that everyone’s point of view could be heard.
Emphasizing on the need for dialogue, he said, one cannot be self-righteous and everyone has to be taken along in teamwork.
Party sources said that despite the efforts of state in-charge Harish Choudhary, the party has not been able to resolve differences as the leaders are working on different objectives.
