Goa’s Mormugao port was in the news recently as it recorded the highest cargo growth of 60.47 per cent in August. The West Coast port is part of the 12 major Indian ports directly under the control of the central government. The good news on the economic front also coincides with Goa’s domestic cruise season which is once again improving its sails in an attempt to rule the waves.
Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) is becoming an important link in Goa’s recovery path. The coastal state is mainly dependent on tourism for its finances and MPT is playing a vital role in ensuring its success. Besides this, sea freight is also another top earner for the state, which is also handled by the MPT.

The port’s cargo handling has been a boon to the state as the second wave of the global pandemic has brought any other economic activity to a halt. Tourism got the shortest end of the stick as lockdown measures were put in place. Faced with such circumstances, it is commendable that MPT was able to register a growth of 60.47 per cent in cargo traffic – the highest in any Indian port.
Along with JSW and Vedanta, the Adani Group manages ores from India’s iron and coal mines. Both JSW and Vedanta have two berths each, with one berth in the port terminal with Adani.
Coal projects are the reason behind the increase in traffic at MPT, but it was also the major iron ore exporting Indian port with 54.50 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2010-11. However, with the decline in global iron ore demand, cargo volumes declined and other shipments picked up.
Nevertheless, tourism has always been a mainstay for the state and the authorities have always tried their best to facilitate it.
MPT’s vice president announced the port’s intention to place work orders for the international and domestic cruise terminals by the end of the year, with the operator for the terminal. Additionally, domestic cruises have also started as harbingers of better days. MV Empress reached MPT with 1,591 passengers and took 75 new passengers.
As the economic recovery picks up pace, there is no doubt that the MPT will again see its fair share of sunny days. After all, sunshine always follows rain.
