NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended till August 28 the deadline for demolition of Supertech’s twin towers in Noida.

Earlier this month, Supertech had filed an application in the top court citing a letter from Edifice in which it had cited security concerns to seek an extension of three months.
In February, the private firm had sought four-and-a-half months to prepare the twin towers for demolition, but the Noida authority refused to consider their pleas and declared May 22 as the date of demolition.
This time too, Edphis’ request was rejected by the authority saying it would be a breach of contract. Hence, Edifice wrote to Supertech, which approached the SC on Tuesday.
Mumbai-based Edphis Engineering and its South African partner Jet Demolition have sought expansion on technical grounds. He has said that considering the strength of the two towers in Sector 93A, they will have to blast two additional floors. In such a situation, preparations will take more time.
In addition, the companies are also taking into account the monsoon, which will set in during the demolition process. After the test explosion on 10 April, Edifice stated that the towers’ basement was too strong and suggested that the demolition process could be extended.
The basements of the two towers were built to bear the weight of the 40-storey buildings – 32 were eventually built.
In early February, the top court asked the Noida authority to convene a meeting and start the demolition process by 20th of that month. In a meeting held on February 9, the date of demolition was fixed for May 22 and the court was informed.
