Supreme Court disposes of 1,293 cases in last one week: CJI UU Lalita

The Supreme Court has disposed of 1,293 cases in the last one week, Chief Justice of India UU Lalit said at the felicitation ceremony organized by the Bar Council of India.

In four working days, Chief Justice of India UU Lalit gave a glimpse of his entire tenure and disposed of 1,293 miscellaneous cases and 106 regular hearings.

Justice Lalit takes over as CJI After the retirement of former CJI NV Ramana on August 27. The CJI will retire on November 8 and will have a tenure of 74 days.

As per the data presented by the Secretary General of the Supreme Court, 440 transfer petitions have been disposed of in four working days.

“The total number of miscellaneous cases disposed of in the last four days was 1,296 and the disposal of regular cases was 106. The court staff informed me. This shows that the court is working at this pace. The Supreme Court also passed 440 transfers. Disposal of petition matters in the last four days,” CJI Lalit said at the felicitation function organized by the Bar Council of India.

He said that the Supreme Court would try to dispose of as many cases as possible and he would try his best during his short tenure as CJI to live up to the expectations and added, “The Supreme Court will try to dispose of as many cases as possible.” If possible, bring it to the Supreme Court as much as possible and let this message go to every nook and corner of the country.”

The CJI said, “Everyone was telling me what kind of expectations they have from me. I will try my best to live up to your expectations and will be able to stand before you after 3 months.”

Before taking over as the Chief Justice of India, Justice Lalit had made it clear that his priority would be to list matters, mention urgent matters, constitution benches. Changes in these three areas were seen in the first four working days of the apex court, including the setting up of two Constitution Benches.

During the entire 16-month tenure of his predecessor Justice NV Ramana, there was no Constitution Bench hearing. A total of 492 Constitution Bench cases were pending in the Apex Court, including 53 main matters relating to major questions of law and constitutional interpretation.
