On 5 May, a Surat court sentenced Goyani’s murder to death, considering it the “rarest of rare” case. Goyani was convicted on February 12 for slitting his throat in front of his family members and neighbors of Vekaria, a resident of Kamrej.
Goyani was upset after Vekaria refused to be in a relationship with him. He had also stabbed Vekaria’s brother and uncle when they tried to save him and later injured himself with the same knife. The police took him to a hospital in Kamrej and after treatment arrested him on February 16.
The police had filed a 2,500-page chargesheet within a week of the incident and later submitted 120 documentary evidences to strengthen the case.
Many viewers captured the entire incident on their smartphones. Video clips and eye-witnesses of 25 people proved to be important evidence for the prosecution.
The HC’s notice to Goyani is the 47th notice issued in the last three months in confirmed death cases. Various sessions courts have condemned the death of 47 people in 2022 in eight separate cases, including the 2008 serial blasts case, in which 38 people were ordered to be hanged by a special court in February.
