India’s men’s hockey team defender Surendra Kumar has warned that there will be no easy match at the Commonwealth Games starting in Birmingham on 28 July, adding that his side will be playing one game at a time with the opener against Ghana. “Our training sessions are still going on. Our focus has been mainly on fitness and we are working a lot on this aspect of the game. We have worked on getting stronger in other areas as well, especially in defence,” Surendra said.
In the Commonwealth Games, India has been placed in Pool B along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana. He will start his campaign against Ghana on 31 July. Surendra said that the team will not take any team lightly and will play match by match.

“We are closely following their footage which we have got. Our coaches are planning accordingly and we would expect to follow the same on match day. There will be no easy team in the tournament and we will go game-by-game,” Surendra said.

“Our target is to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. Rest will depend on our performance.
“The matches we have played since Tokyo Olympics 2020 have been very good. We have played against strong teams and that has really helped us. We executed our plans well and thus were able to identify the areas where we can improve. We have focused on those areas in the camp.”
Surendra also praised the mix of experience and youth in the team and spoke about what mentors have been given by senior players to youngsters like Abhishek and Jugraj Singh.
“We have asked the players not to feel the pressure of performing in the Commonwealth Games and take them as normal sports. Coaches and senior players have also been telling him that he has the experience of playing against strong teams and that is why he is ready to perform in the competition.
